Like an abacus, Ana Morgadinho’s art contains within it the fundamentalist nature of its materiality and a fascination with the shape of the world, while at the same time admitting its own limitations and pointing to abstraction. Like an abacus, it recognises the beauty of knowledge and order, beauty which is formed by standards, classifications, links, rhythms. However, the work of the artist is also aware that this knowledge, just like itself, the artwork, and just like the abacus, are a trap: the solidity of Western ecclesiastical architecture lies at the mercy of the precariousness of a rickety structure, the friendly face of a Renaissance portrait painting lies on the path to a void.
